Prioritize Your Eyes
How often you have your eyes checked depends on a few factors. If you are at a higher risk of eye disease or have a preexisting medical condition like diabetes, you may require more frequent exams to ensure the health of your eye is monitored closely.
When You Should Have Your Eyes Checked
If you are in fine health and not at risk for any ocular conditions, you can follow the recommendations laid out by the American Optometric Association:
- Ages 18–64: Every 2 years
- Ages 65+: Every year
At-risk patients will likely need their eyes checked every year.

Do you have diabetes, hypertension, thyroid issues, or an autoimmune condition? Systemic diseases can affect your eyes and vision, making regular eye exams crucial for the early detection of complications and proactive management to preserve your vision.
Our comprehensive exams go beyond standard vision testing. We review your medical history, conduct a detailed eye exam with dilation and tonometry, and recommend additional tests specific to your condition.
These steps allow us to identify potential eye issues linked to your health condition and develop a personalized care plan.
We work hand-in-hand with your primary care doctor and generate a detailed eye exam report so we can co-manage your chronic condition and eye health.

Adult & Senior Eye Exam FAQs
Have questions about your next eye exam? Here are answers to some of the questions we hear most often from patients in North Scottsdale, Fountain Hills, and North Phoenix.
How often should adults have an eye exam?
If you’re healthy and not at risk for eye conditions, the American Optometric Association recommends an eye exam every 2 years for adults aged 18 to 64, and every year for adults 65 and older. If you’re at a higher risk of eye disease or have a medical condition like diabetes, you’ll likely need yearly exams. Not sure when you’re due? Get in touch with our team and we’ll help you find the right schedule.
Do I need an eye exam if my vision seems fine?
Yes. Many eye diseases and conditions develop slowly and don’t cause noticeable symptoms in their early stages. A comprehensive eye exam checks the health of your eyes, not just how clearly you see, so we can catch changes early, before they affect your vision. Regular exams also keep your prescription up to date, which can reduce eye strain in your day-to-day life.
What happens during an adult eye exam at Eye Lab?
Your exam takes about an hour. Our team starts by learning about you, including your family history and any medications you take. We then use the latest technology to assess the overall health of your eyes and measure your visual acuity, or how well you see, with incredible accuracy. All of our tests are noninvasive. Afterward, you’re welcome to browse our large selection of frames in our optical emporium.
What eye conditions can an eye exam detect?
A comprehensive eye exam can detect early signs of common eye diseases such as glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy, along with other irregularities and changes in your vision. Because your eyes are a window to your overall health, an exam can also reveal signs of systemic conditions. If we find something, we’ll talk you through your options for diagnosis and management.
Why are eye exams important if I have diabetes or high blood pressure?
Systemic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, thyroid issues, and autoimmune conditions can affect your eyes and vision. For these patients, our exams include a review of your medical history, a detailed eye exam with dilation and tonometry, and any additional tests specific to your condition. We work hand-in-hand with your primary care doctor and share a detailed eye exam report so we can co-manage your eye health. Learn more about our diabetic eye exams.
What should I bring to my eye exam?
Please bring your current glasses and contact lenses, a list of any medications you take, and your insurance information. It also helps to note any changes in your vision or symptoms you’ve noticed, like headaches or digital eye strain. You can review our insurance and payment information before your visit.
Can my eye exam be done in Chinese or Spanish?
Yes. We perform eye exams in Chinese, and we also have someone who can translate in Spanish during the exam, so you can feel comfortable and understand every step. Our Testimonials
I am 75 years old and have had issues with my eyes since birth, probably. I moved to Arizona 3 and 1/2 years ago and had to find all new doctors. On one of my first visits she diagnosed one of my conditions. It is called trichiasis. That is a condition where a person has two rows of eyelashes. They tend to curl inward irritating the eye. Now all that I need to do is have them pulled every few weeks and fairly soon they won’t even grow back.
I am so pleased to have found Dr. Serena Shao. She is opening a practice in Scottsdale and I will be driving 40 miles to be seen by her and her staff.

Every time I’ve came in for my eye visits Dr.Shao is very professional, thorough, and is always warm and sweet. I would recommend her to anyone who needs a eye visit or glasses. I give her a 10/10. I’ve been to several eye doctors and she is by far best one I’ve ever had!
