Eye Disease 101
Some eye diseases are more common than others. Find out more information here about some eye diseases, prevention, and treatments if available.
Cataracts
As we age, the lens in our eye may become cloudy or opaque—this is called a cataract. Your optometrist may prescribe stronger lenses to accommodate the change, but eventually, you may require cataract surgery to restore your vision.
Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases typically caused by high pressure inside of your eye. It generally affects older adults, but it can happen at any age and slowly deteriorates your sight starting from your outermost vision (peripheral). Although there is no cure, we can help prevent vision loss if diagnosed early.
Macular Degeneration
Also known as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), this disease affects your center-most vision, causing it to be blurry, dark, or wavy. There are 2 types: dry and wet. While some treatment is available for wet AMD, it’s best to prevent the disease from progressing into this stage by keeping up with your routine eye exams and recommendations from your optometrist.
Diabetic Retinopathy
As the leading cause of blindness in adults, diabetic retinopathy affects the blood vessels in your eyes. This preventable disease causes the blood vessels to swell and leak into your retina, the part of your eye responsible for translating light into images.

Our Testimonials
I am 75 years old and have had issues with my eyes since birth, probably. I moved to Arizona 3 and 1/2 years ago and had to find all new doctors. On one of my first visits she diagnosed one of my conditions. It is called trichiasis. That is a condition where a person has two rows of eyelashes. They tend to curl inward irritating the eye. Now all that I need to do is have them pulled every few weeks and fairly soon they won’t even grow back.
I am so pleased to have found Dr. Serena Shao. She is opening a practice in Scottsdale and I will be driving 40 miles to be seen by her and her staff.

Every time I’ve came in for my eye visits Dr.Shao is very professional, thorough, and is always warm and sweet. I would recommend her to anyone who needs a eye visit or glasses. I give her a 10/10. I’ve been to several eye doctors and she is by far best one I’ve ever had!
